Unbridled Glory captures the raw power, focus and emotion of a racehorse and rider driving forward with absolute determination.

The horse’s head is turned slightly to one side, its nostrils flaring as though drawing in every breath before the next surge of speed. Its gaze is fixed forward, creating a feeling of thought, purpose and anticipation. There is a sense that horse and rider are completely connected — focused on what lies ahead, with no hesitation.

For this painting, I wanted to capture more than the movement of a racehorse. I wanted to capture the emotion and power of the moment — the concentration, excitement and controlled energy that exists just before everything is unleashed.

Using my own specially created palette knives, I build and shape the horse through bold, deliberate marks, pushing, pulling, carving and layering the paint rather than simply applying it. Each movement of the knife helps create the structure of the horse, from the strength of its head and neck to the flowing movement of its mane. The broken, textured marks bring a sense of speed and energy, allowing the paint itself to become part of the movement.

The muted colours of the horse and rider contrast with the blue-grey clouded background, creating a dramatic, atmospheric setting. The subdued palette allows the expression, texture and movement to take centre stage.

Unbridled Glory is about power held in check — the moment before freedom, when horse and rider are completely focused on the road ahead.
