Stillness of Steel captures the powerful, commanding presence of a raven, its gaze fixed forward with a sense of intelligence, strength and quiet emotion.

I wanted to create more than simply a portrait of a raven. There is a feeling of thought and purpose within its expression, as though it is watching, waiting and understanding far more than it reveals. Its stillness creates a powerful contrast with the energy and movement of the paint.

Using my own specially created palette knives, I build, carve and sculpt the layers of paint, creating strong textures and broken marks that give the raven a sense of depth and presence. A balance of cool and warm tones flows through the painting.

The contrast between the warm and cool colours adds depth, energy and emotion, while the bold knife work allows me to shape the light and shadow, giving the raven strength, character and an almost sculptural presence.

For me, Stillness of Steel is about quiet power, intelligence and emotion — the strength that can be found not in movement, but in simply standing still and looking forward.
