Spirit Unbowed, captures this hare running forward through the soft mist of an early morning, its body moving with purpose while looking directly at you. There is a sense that it knows exactly where it is going, yet remains completely aware of everything around it.I wanted to bring thought, power and emotion into the hare’s movement. It is not simply running—it feels determined, focused and unwilling to be held back. The forward gaze gives the painting a feeling of confidence and quiet defiance, as though the hare is moving towards whatever lies ahead without hesitation.

The misty morning creates a softer, atmospheric background, allowing the warmth of the hare to become the emotional heart of the painting. I deliberately contrasted the warm earthy tones of the hare against the cooler, muted greens and grasses, making the animal stand forward from its surroundings.

This painting also represents another step in my own development as an artist. I wanted to change the way I use my specially created palette knives, becoming more expressive and purposeful with every mark. Rather than simply describing the hare’s fur, I used the knives to build, carve and sculpt the movement, allowing the texture to follow the direction of the body and suggest speed and energy.

For me, Spirit Unbowed is about movement, determination and the courage to keep going forward—even when the path ahead is hidden in the mist.
